Kindergarden Success in the Bronx

CFK's Second Trust

In February 1999, Change for Kids established its second $25,000 trust - kindergarten classes at Community Elementary School 73 (CES 73). We recently increased this Trust from $25,000 to $37,500. Located in the Bronx, CES 73 is part of District 9, known as one of the most poorly funded districts in New York City. This elementary school has five bilingual kindergarten classes and two monolingual kindergarten classes serving approximately 175 children. For the 1998-99 school year budget, the kindergarten teachers were allocated only $24 per student for supplies. What fuels Change for Kids is the astonishing fact that one $5,000 donation can double the entire kindergarten budget for the year.

In addition to the full-time activity of promoting children's education, Change for Kids strongly advocates cooperation among not-for-profits. In support of creating synergy between organizations, CFK chose CES 73, a school in which another not-for-profit, Teach for America, has placed kindergarten teachers. It is CFK's hope that this link with Teach for America will maximize the value derived from our efforts and the generosity of our sponsors and donors. Additionally, P.E.N.C.I.L, a non-profit that provides school supplies and is well renowned for its "Principal for a Day" program in public schools, donated over 1,000 new textbooks to PS 243 and CES 73 this year.
