P.S. 154 - West Harlem
Kindergarden Success in Harlem
The Harriet Tubman Learning Center- CFK's Third Trust
In June 2000, Change for Kids established its third $37,500 trust for the kindergarten classes at Community School 154 - The Harriet Tubman Learning Center. Located in District 5 in Harlem, P.S. 154's mission is to educate all of their students in a caring, enriching environment to become critical, literate, creative thinkers, effective communicators, independent learners and active, responsible citizens through excellence in teaching and learning.
The school encompasses 654 students in Pre-K through grade 5. It is organized into two centers: the Early Childhood Center, grades Pre-K to 2; and the Upper School, grades 3-5. Students are grouped heterogeneously. Bilingual / ESL and special education students are part of each school, with parallel programs and curriculum. Literacy is integrated throughout the curriculum and the support services. At the present time, some of the instructional programs are: Success for All, Mathland, Math in Context, and Authors and Artists.
P.S. 154 has an extraordinarily high number of students who qualify for Federal Lunch aid in New York City. Studies show that as the rate of qualifying students increases, test scores decrease, implying a correlation between those who cannot afford a school lunch and the learning process.
The Harriet Tubman Learning Center is a school in which every child will be challenged to meet the highest standards within a leaning environment that nurtures the whole child.
