The Walter Francis Bishop School- CFK's Fourth Trust
In August 2000, Change for Kids established its fourth $37,500 trust for the entire kindergarten class at Public School 160 - The Walter Francis Bishop School. Located in District 28 in Jamaica, Queens, P.S. 160's mission is to create a learning environment which nurtures the greatest level of student achievement, builds self-esteem, and champions the value of education.
Change for Kids worked with another non-profit, the Center for Children + Families, to choose this school, located in a high poverty area in the Jamaica section of Queens. P.S. 160 services children in Pre-K through the 6th grade, with six Kindergarten classes. This school has a capacity of 750 and presently houses 1005. 99.7% of children receive free or reduced price lunch. All grades devote 135 minutes per day to Reading/ Literacy, including a 90-minute block, as mandated by the District 28 Literacy Program.
