Jazz at Lincoln Center

Swinging to Success

For more than eleven years, CFK has been partnering with Jazz at Lincoln Center to bring dynamic educational music performances to our students. Featuring some of the world’s most well-known and talented musicians, our programs give kids an opportunity to learn about jazz as it’s best experienced: live!

Through the generosity of Jazz at Lincoln Center, students from P.S. 243 (Brooklyn), P.S.154 (Harlem), and P.S.160 (Queens) visit the historic Apollo Theatre and the Frederick P. Rose Hall (Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center) a performance led by acclaimed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. In the past, Arturo O'Farrill and his Latin Jazz Quintet have presented “Rhythm in Swing,” illustrating how swing, a concept central to jazz, plays out in other musical genres. As well as “Arroz con Bebop,” a performance exploring Latin music’s influence in shaping jazz (and vice-versa). This year, 90 students and parents from P.S. 160 attended a show by trombone player Wycliffe Gordon.

Students and school staff consistently tell us how thrilled they are by these opportunities to get up-close and personal with the musicians.
